Fort Washington
Fort Washington
Fort Washington was a fortified position near the end of northern Manhattan, but now it's just part of the neighborhood of Washington Heights. This fort's purpose was to stop the Brits from going up the Hudson river (on the New Jersey side), and securing an escape passage.
Fort Washington was mainly built for the War of 1812. It was the only fort protecting approach into Washington D.C during the War of 1812. Fort Washington was left understaffed and ill-equipped while British troops landed and engaged American defenders at Bladensburg, Maryland. After successfully rerouting the Americans the British then entered Washington and burnt its Buildings to the Ground. Fort Washington was destroyed in order to prevent its capture by the enemy.
